Lead institution:

Leibniz Institut für Ostseeforschung, Warnemünde – Germany

The long-term observation program, consisting of five annual cruises in the Baltic Sea (BS), is an integral part of the research program “Perspectives of Coastal Seas.”

It provides time series on the variability of hydrographic, chemical, and biological parameters and processes for the research focus “Coastal Seas in Transition – Present, Past, and Future Perspectives.” Additionally, it supplies essential data for investigating processes along the main gradients within the BS and from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, supporting the research focus “Key Processes across Scales.” This observation program forms the scientific basis for studying the natural variability of the BS ecosystem, anthropogenic influences (e.g., nutrient load, microplastics), and the effects of climate change. All data are freely available to the community. The results support cooperation in the BS region and environmental policy assessments of the BS ecosystem status.
