Ocean Decade Actions are the concrete initiatives carried out across the globe to fulfill the Ocean Decade vision of ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. They tackle the ten Ocean Decade Challenges by generating and applying knowledge to support the development of ocean solutions.
These Decade Actions are led by a wide range of stakeholders including, but not limited to, research institutes, governments, UN entities, intergovernmental organizations and other international and regional organizations, business and industry, philanthropic and corporate foundations, non-governmental organizations, educators, community groups or individuals (e.g. via community-led science initiatives).
Different levels of Decade Actions are implemented:
- A Decade Programme is typically global or regional in scale and contributes to the achievement of one or more of the Decade Challenges. It is long-term (multi-year), interdisciplinary and consists of component Decade Projects and potentially enabling Decade Activities.
- A Decade Project is a targeted regional, national or subnational initiative that typically contributes to an identified Decade Programme.
- A Decade Contribution supports the Ocean Decade through provision of funding or in-kind contributions. It can support either the implementation of a Decade Action or the coordination costs of the Ocean Decade.
- A Decade Activity is a one-off standalone initiative (such as an awareness-raising event, a scientific workshop, a training opportunity or a publication). It enables a Decade Programme or Project or directly contributes to a Decade Challenge.
Endorsement of Decade Programmes and Projects is granted through biannual Calls for Decade Actions. Contributions and Activities can be submitted for endorsement on a rolling basis. Details about endorsement processes are available on the Take Action page.
