The UNESCO Chair OceanExpert is set to promote an integrated system of research, training, and information on ocean science education, ocean literacy and sustainable ocean economy.
It aims to facilitate collaboration between recognised researchers and teaching staff of the University and other institutions in Portugal and Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific. Its specific objectives are to:
- i) undertake research on critical gaps in ocean science, governance and practices to meet relevant challenges for successful implementation of the Ocean Decade;
- ii) promote Ocean Science education and training of children, youth, civil society and targeted stakeholders with focus on disadvantaged groups;
- iii) establish a network with countries in the South and other UNESCO Chairs, considering the global priorities of UNESCO, acting as a hub for information and global connector, harnessing higher education innovations; and
- iv) cooperate closely with UNESCO and existing UNESCO Chairs.
