然而，对其结构和功能以及相关的生物物理化学过程的理解是有限的。该倡议旨在了解太平洋中层生态系统的物种多样性、分布和生物量，上层、中层和深海中层区域之间的食物网连接，生物泵和碳通量，以及水柱混合和营养物质循环。活动将包括联合探索和数据共享、能力建设、公众和政策制定者参与保护中上层。
