The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) at the United Nations Ocean Conference

The 2022 UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will take place on 27 June – 1 July 2022, in Lisbon, Portugal. The overall theme of the Conference is: “Scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions.”

The Ocean Decade will be present and will play a key role in the Conference by hosting important events and providing opportunities to unlock the knowledge needed to deliver the vision of the Ocean We Want.

High-Level Ocean Decade Alliance Meeting

Monday, 27 June 2022 ⏰ 15:00 – 16:15 📍 Altice Arena, Committee Room

This high-level meeting will promote interaction among Patrons and members of the Ocean Decade Alliance and potential new members. It will include a presentation of the aspirations and plans of the Decade Alliance, and allow space for announcements from individual Alliance members or groups of members on new commitments or initiatives. An official Ocean Decade publication will be launched, focused on the links between the Decade and the 2030 Agenda, also targeting SDG 14.

The Ocean Decade Forum

Thursday, 30 June 2022 ⏰ 14:30 – 17:00 📍 Ciência Viva Auditorium

The Ocean Decade Forum will convey a message of action, partnership, and inclusivity, showing participants the many ways they can be part of the Decade!

Endorsed Decade Actions will be showcased, providing information on their implementation and achievements, and a wide range of partners will make announcements about exciting new commitments. This event will be both in person (200 persons maximum) and live streamed.

Empowering Youth for the Ocean We Need 💫🏄‍♀️

Following the launch of its Ocean Literacy Toolkit for Policymakers, UNESCO has announced an ambitious objective to integrate ocean education into national curricula of all its Member States by 2025. But how can we empower youth, and citizens at large, beyond the classroom to sustain ocean action in this Ocean Decade?

Ms Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General, convenes an interactive discussion between UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Oskar Metsavaht and Maya Gabeira, UNESCO Champion for the Ocean and Youth, to highlight the role of ocean education to empower the next generations for creating the ocean we need.

Our Ocean Future: Empowering the Next Generation of Ocean Leaders 🙋‍♀️

Workshop on Science Communication and Blue Storytelling 🙋‍♂️

This workshop will be an immersive and interactive event that will provide information, skills and ready-to-use tools for youth from EU4Ocean, Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and other networks to better develop key messages and the use of storytelling when promoting narratives about the ocean.

This event is organized in collaboration with EU4Ocean and the Ocean Decade Communications Advisory Group.

Ocean Science and Its Policy Interface: from Knowledge to Sustainable Ocean Solutions 📘

This side event will provide a platform for world experts engaged in the Ocean Decade and in the UN Regular Process – scientists, NGOs, international organizations, private sector representatives – to showcase ambitious science-based initiatives that are accessible, reliable, scalable and sustainable. It will also provide the opportunity to engage policymakers and understand how the knowledge discovered by the scientific community can support them. These actions share the commonality that they are built on collaboration and co-design amongst various stakeholders in the development and use of science-based solutions to start managing the ocean sustainably.

The Ocean Impact Navigator: Harnessing Innovation and a New Impact Measurement Framework to Regenerate Ocean Health 💻

Final Ceremony of the Sea Beyond project in cooperation with PRADA.

UNESCO and Prada Group launched a competition inviting students to freely interpret (using text, graphics or interactive contents) one of the ten challenges of the Ocean Decade. This event will celebrate the winner of the contest and will have the presence of jury members, which are well-known professionals of the ocean.

This event, organized by IOC-UNESCO & the African Union Commission, aims to promote Africa’s Blue Economy agenda – the Africa Blue Economy Strategy; promote new initiatives on Blue Economy; promote the integration of women and youth in ocean science; identify sustainable partnerships, tools and entry points to promote innovation and sustainability in the Blue Economy and lay the foundations to discuss ocean-based climate solutions at COP 27 and ocean finance for a just transition.

This side event will provide a high-level overview of current ocean data interoperability initiatives with key examples from around the world, share insights from these efforts and discuss how these can support the goals of the UN Ocean Decade and contribute to achieving the UN 2030 Agenda, and in particular SDG 14.

Ocean Dialogues 💬

This high-level side event will be organized by the EU4Ocean Coalition in cooperation with IOC-UNESCO, and will allow the participation of different institutions worldwide. The dialogue will be widened beyond the ocean literacy community to include different cultures and sectors of society in order to achieve the objectives of the Ocean Decade.

Uncovering People’s Engagement with the Ocean: From Local to Global Perspective 📑

The event will launch the official results of a national survey carried out in Brazil to assess citizen’s engagement with the ocean. This innovative pilot survey will inform the implementation of the Ocean Decade communication strategy in Brazil, and could offer a template for similar work in other countries.

This event is organized in collaboration with Fundação Grupo Boticário, UNESCO and Universidade Federal de São Paulo.

Growing the Ocean Decade through Aquariums

This event will discuss how Aquariums can help perpetuate messaging around the Ocean Decade, exploring examples of engagement from aquariums around the world including China, France, United States, Japan and Mexico.

Training for Policymakers on Blue Curriculum 📖

A training for educational authorities, policymakers, curriculum developers and experts on the new publication A new blue curriculum: a toolkit for policy-maker.

Ocean Decade Exhibitions 🖼️

These exhibitions will bring the themes and major issues of the UN Ocean Conference out of the conference venue and into several locations throughout Lisbon City!

Creative Design Exhibition (Partners: UNEP, The Ocean Agency, Adobe)

The core exhibit material will be drawn from the Ocean Decade Creative Exhibition, and visual assets provided by other partners, including UNEP, the Ocean Agency, and Adobe.

Ocean Art Gallery (Partners: Schmidt Ocean Institute, Nautilus)

Using the amazing artwork from the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s “Artist-in-Residence” Programme as well as assets from Nautilus Magazine and the Frame Store (London), this interactive exhibit will mix more classic art formats with modern representations of the ocean and its biodiversity, providing an eclectic fusion of colours, sounds, light and virtual reality.

Rock in Rio: Generation Ocean Concert 🎶

The Rock in Rio Lisbon Festival will have a fully dedicated day in support of the official communications campaign of the Ocean Decade: Generation Ocean (#GenOcean)!

Before and during the concert, the evening’s programme will highlight the GenOcean campaign’s potential to harness the power of individual and collective citizen action to protect, restore, and live harmoniously with the ocean.

Following the UN Ocean Conference Youth Summit, and on the eve of the opening of the actual UN Ocean Conference, this co-branded Rock in Rio Lisbon “Generation Ocean” Concert will kick-off the UN Ocean Conference in great style and sound, bringing the major themes and issues of the conference to the heart of society.
