The majority of planet Earth is actually ocean, 70% to be exact. As terrestrial beings, we can forget that, yet we rely on the ocean for so much, including the very air we breathe. Did you know that every other breath we take supplies our bodies with oxygen directly derived from the byproduct of photosynthesizing algae in the ocean? Through that photosynthesis, marine algae remove carbon dioxide helping to regulate the climate. The ocean itself also regulates climate by absorbing solar energy and transferring it through currents. Biology and physics aside, the ocean supports our economy, our diets and our cultures. From the body of water where all life on Earth originated to the vast horizons of blue that call on our emotions, the ocean is the key to life and we believe it deserves to be celebrated every day.
Join us this World Ocean Day, Week and Month by giving back to our blue planet through Ocean Decade actions for citizen scientists and young ocean leaders around the globe. Dive deeper and learn more about each to find out how you can get involved.

Ocean Change 2025 Arved Fuchs Expedition - Июнь 1
Ocean Change 2025 Arved Fuchs Expedition – Июнь 1
Arved Fuchs and his sailing ship Dagmar Aaen are embarking on a new adventure for science. For the tenth year in a row, he is continuing his OCEAN CHANGE climate expedition series around the Atlantic and the North Atlantic Current. This year’s leg is divided into two sea areas: the first leg will take place in the Baltic Sea and the eastern Baltic Sea, while the second leg will cover the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology aboard the Dagmar Aaen, meteorological and oceanographic data such as salinity, CO2 saturation and surface water temperature can be freely tracked 24/7 in real time on the beluga.geomar.de platform. This data and photographs of the seawater will contribute to the citizen science pilot project, “Sailing for Oxygen,” organized by GEOMAR and Trans-Ocean e.V. and which flows into the international project EyeOnWater, in which people around the world are participating.
Collecting this data from the ship is pretty simple. A camera attached to the jib boom of the Dagmar Aaen will be used to photograph the seawater throughout the expedition. The color of the water alone provides scientists with valuable information on the ecological status. Arved Fuchs encourages other sailing crews to actively participate in the collection of marine data in the Baltic Sea as well.

Under the Pole at UNOC3 - Июнь 2 - 14
Under the Pole at UNOC3 – Июнь 2 – 14
Under the Pole: Deeplife 2021 – 2030 is an Ocean Decade action that addresses three Ocean Decade Challenges: 1 – Understand and beat marine pollution, 2 – Protect and restore ecosystems and biodiversity and 10 – Restore society’s relationship with the ocean. Under the Pole focuses on the mesophotic zone of the ocean at depths between 30 and 200 meters. This zone is one of Earth’s last unknown habitats and home to diverse marine life that has yet to be discovered. They aim to explore these ecosystems in all basins of the ocean, from the polar regions to the tropics, to discover their biodiversity and species connectivity, identify their vulnerability to global changes and ultimately to propose appropriate management and conservation measures for this unique and largely unexplored marine area.
