OceanForesters and others are developing a prioritized list of potential concrete deliverables with a global survey of all stakeholders. Together, the survey and list continue virtual planning that can achieve the goals of the 2020 UN Ocean Conference in 2020. (The in-person conference was postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19).
This is the second draft of a document describing possible deliverables for the Decade. The deliverables form a circular economy (cradle-to-cradle sustainability) as well as circular Science-Development-Science-Development to restore healthy oceans while supporting sustainable development. Section 2 explains how the list of possible deliverables and the survey combine to become a planning document, a living document, and a virtual substitute for the 2020 UN Ocean Conference. Possible concrete deliverables in this 22May 20 version: • Food – Sustainable seafood to feed 10 billion people, increased terrestrial food with aquatic resources, increased marine protected areas • Human and solid waste recovery – promoting human, animal and ocean health by safely reusing nutrients, sewage surveillance for COVID-19 • Sustainable and restorative energy systems – traditional renewable energy, systems producing sequestration-ready CO2, ocean biomass-for-energy, CO2 sequestration systems • Floating land – living reefs with rising shelters Survey is at: (link to be provided in Topic “Planning Concrete Deliverables for the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development” at the Forum) The survey includes boxes for suggesting more deliverables and making comments or edits on the document. A dedicated forum is open online: https://www.oceandecade.org/forum Your replies can include suggestions for more deliverables and comments or edits for the document. OceanForesters will add suggestions from the survey and Forum to the next version of this planning document.
