With nearly 80,000 students, including 10,000 international students and 120 research structures linked to the largest French research organisations (Inserm, CNRS, IRD, INRA, CEA, etc.) and its 12 doctoral schools, Aix-Marseille University (AMU) is a considerable asset in support of regional development.
Aix-Marseille University was created on 1 January 2012 by the merger of three pre-existing universities. Aware of the major societal role it plays in its territory, Aix-Marseille University is constantly striving to modernise its practices.
Aix-Marseille University is coordinating the European University “CIVIS, a European Civic University” with 7 partner universities across Europe. Based on the shared civic identities of its members, CIVIS brings together nearly 400,000 students and 55,000 staff together.
The A*Midex University Foundation, which carries the French “Excellence Initiative”, contributes to the development of a world-class multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary higher education and research center. Numerous successes within the French “Investments for the Future” programme highlights the dynamism of its research and training teams. Interdisciplinarity and innovation are strong markers of AMU’s research identity.
With the aim of increasing the visibility of the institution at the national and international levels, 13 interdisciplinary institutes for research and education were created in 2018, to promote Aix-Marseille University as a centre of excellence. Their uniqueness is to combine high-level education and intensive research within Graduate school, delivering an excellent training. The main challenges for our university are to generate new knowledge and know-how through the prism of interdisciplinarity, to bring out talent, to attract the best researchers and to compete for external funding.
