The Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) from the University of Azores (UAç) / Portugal has as its mission helping the society to achieve a prosperous and sustainable world through outstanding science development, education, and outreach activities.
Located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean and being one of the outermost regions of the European Union, the geographical context that surrounds FCT provides a unique natural laboratory to its six departments. The remoteness we find ourselves in has shaped our innovative mindset not only within our institute, in areas of earth and life science, but also throughout the Azorian lifestyle regarding our economical, social and cultural aspect.
Last year, the FCT was involved in 39 regional, national and international projects, that have contributed in issues related to ocean management and global warming, biotechnology, and technological innovation, among others. To name a few projects: “Marine Spatial Planning under a Changing Climate”, “Development of new products and processes derived from macroalgae in the context of Macaronesian Blue Biotechnology and transfer to enterprises” and "SeaThing: Robotic and Artificial intelligence project.". Beyond that, we also produced several publications and took part in many conferences, besides developing outreaching activities in the region.
We believe that in order to transform science into action it is crucial to narrow the gap between theory and practice, and we are here to help it happen.
