The Institute of Marine Research (IIM) belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the main research organization in Spain, the third in Europe and the seventh in the world.
The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC, www.iim.csic.es) takes a multidisciplinary approach to marine research enabling an integral and global understanding of marine ecosystems. The IIM-CSIC as a marine research institution devoted to science for sustainable development, responding to global challenges and to local concerns, generates interdisciplinary knowledge directly connected to UN SDGs, such as knowledge on oceans and climate to predict change and base urgent actions to combat or mitigate its impacts, on biodiversity and conservation to sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources or on food, bio-products and health to achieve food security, improved nutrition, healthy lives and well-being. Considering the scientific production, IIM-CSIC results in one of the top marine research institutes in Spain. The IIM-CSIC is also committed to increase Ocean Literacy, working to engage citizens with marine research, not only to raise knowledge on these topics, inspire STEM careers and foster critical thinking, but also to involve as many key stakeholders as possible in the scientific production process through co-creation actions. As a result, the centre has a long record on science communication & public engagement initiatives, outreach activities and citizen science projects.
