The United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) has announced that Urchinomics is at this time one of only three commercial ventures in the world to be formally endorsed as an Ocean Decade action.

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) demonstrates the conviction of UN Member States that enhanced knowledge of the ocean is a prerequisite to achieving sustainable development. The Ocean Decade seeks to create a paradigm shift in the generation of qualitative and quantitative ocean knowledge to inform the development of solutions to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The UN Ocean Decade sets out a framework to catalyze transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and the ocean.

Mr Julian Barbière, Coordinator of the Ocean Decade from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO stated that, “We’re always seeking to identify partners, initiatives and commercial ventures that aim to secure the future of the oceans, and indeed the welfare of our planet. Urchinomics’ solution for innovation in the production and processing of seafood that also supports restoration of kelp forests is very much part of the multifaced solution we seek to identify and promote in the framework of the Ocean Decade.”

Brian Tsuyoshi Takeda, CEO and Founder of Urchinomics, was humbled by the accolade and adds that, “It’s with the utmost humility that we accept the endorsement of our technology and methodology to be recognised as being part of a wider solution to protect ocean biodiversity and promote economic development. It’s a powerful validation of our ranching technology which turns a destructive species into a premium, restorative, delicious seafood that therefore helps to bring the kelp forests back to life, promoting balance in our marine ecosystems. We look forward to contributing to meeting the vision of the Ocean Decade, and inspiring other industry partners to commit to delivering ocean science solutions for sustainable development. ”

Urchinomics is operating commercially in Japan, and actively setting up operations in California, Canada and Norway to help combat the destruction of kelp forests. Through its endorsed Decade Action, Urchinomics will contribute to meeting priority challenges of the Ocean Decade related to ecosystem management and restoration, and the development of a sustainable ocean economy.

About Urchinomics:
Urchinomics is a pioneering aquaculture venture that aims to turn ecologically destructive sea urchins into premium seafood products that can be consistently supplied year-round. The Urchinomics business model helps restore kelp forests, which in turn supports greater marine biomass, biodiversity, and capacity to sequester CO2, all while creating meaningful, full-time employment in rural, coastal communities around the world. Urchinomics has active operations in Japan, USA, Canada, and Norway and is seeking additional permitted aquaculture sites and local partners in Japan, North America (West Coast), Canada (East and West Coast), Mexico, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Korea. Please contact Brian Tsuyoshi Takeda if you would like to learn more about ways to partner or invest with Urchinomics.

About the Ocean Decade:
Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.
