Marine taxonomy informs biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development across the blue economy. However, significant constraints, including limited expertise, infrastructure, and investment, continue to affect the field across the region.
Take the EAF-Nansen Programme Taxonomy Survey 2026 to share your perspectives as marine taxonomists in Africa, identify key gaps, challenges and needs in marine taxonomy research and capacity development across Africa.
The survey is anonymous, requires approximately eight minutes to complete, and will remain open from 11 May to 31 August 2026.
The results will guide the design of targeted capacity-development initiatives and strategic recommendations of the EAF-Nansen Programme to strengthen African-led marine taxonomy research and improve regional decision-making processes.
The findings will also be presented during a dedicated session at the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity 2026, contributing to global discussions on how to advance marine taxonomy and build scientific capacity.
The EAF-Nansen Programme is an endorsed Decade Programme.
About the Programme
The EAF-Nansen Programme is FAO and Norway’s longest-running fisheries development initiative, dating back to 1975. Executed in close collaboration with the IMR, regional organizations, and 33 countries across Africa and the Bay of Bengal, it supports sustainable fisheries management for food and nutrition security.
It contributes to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and FAO’s vision for the Blue Transformation of aquatic food systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all.
