Love Planet Earth 2025: Glacier conservation is the focus of the new edition of the Telespazio and e-GEOS Calendar 2560 1251 Ocean Decade

Rome, 16 December 2024 – The 17th edition of the “Love Planet Earth” calendar is available from today, Italy’s National Space Day. Produced by Telespazio (a 67/33% Leonardo/Thales joint venture) and e-GEOS (ASI 20%, Telespazio 80%), with the endorsement of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (‘Ocean Decade’), the 2025 calendar is an initiative dedicated to environmental sustainability as seen through the eyes of the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellites.

Love Planet Earth 2025 aims to offer a journey from Space to the most unexplored, fascinating and extreme environments of Planet Earth. Marking the United Nations’ declaration that 2025 is the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, the calendar shines a spotlight on the beauty and fragility of polar ecosystems and the technological and environmental efforts needed to preserve them. Stories are told through the extraordinary images developed by e-GEOS and generated by COSMO-SkyMed, the Italian satellite constellation that is the result of the investments and commitment of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Italian Ministry of Defence.

They range from Havøygavlen, Norway, where human talent has enabled the construction of the world’s northernmost wind farm (which can provide sustainable energy to local populations despite extreme weather), to Antarctica, a seemingly pristine environment that is affected by marine pollution and melting ice. Love Planet Earth 2025 is a story of resilience to climate change and of sustainable technological innovations, but also a clear illustration of the dangers to which polar ecosystems are exposed.

Thanks to the endorsement as a Decade Activity by the United Nations Ocean Decade, the Italian National Decade Committee (NDC) and the Italian Oceanographic Commission (COI), the initiative joins the global commitment to increase awareness of the fragility of the polar oceans and the need to develop innovative solutions to protect them.

The calendar is also a testament to the potential of Geoinformation to direct nature conservation actions towards the most efficient strategies. A concrete example, mentioned in the calendar, is HIGH NORTH, the Research Programme of the Italian Navy led by the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy. Its aim is to increase navigation safety in the Arctic and contribute to environmental sustainability, with the support of COSMO-SkyMed satellite data processed by e-GEOS.

Love Planet Earth is part of the broader commitment of Leonardo, Telespazio and e-GEOS to sustainability issues. This commitment stems from the awareness of the close link between the space sector, the protection of the planet and the achievement of the sustainable development goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

A preview of the initiative was held on 14 and 15 December at the Museo del ’900 (M9) museum in Venice, in the area currently hosting Edward Burtynsky’s installation In the Way of Progress, as part of the exhibition BURTYNSKY: Extraction / Abstraction, which is focused on the impact of human activities on the planet. An immersive experience, based on the images of the Love Planet Earth 2025 calendar, further contributed to showing the ecosystems’ beauty and fragility.

The Love Planet Earth 2025 calendar can be viewed online here, in the dedicated sections of the Telespazio and e-GEOS websites: the pages of the individual months can be downloaded and used as a background for your PC.
