From February 3 to 7, 2025, Lecce will host the annual meetings of CoastPredict and the Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience (DCC-CR), two key programs under the UN Ocean Decade focused on enhancing coastal resilience worldwide.
For five days, leading experts in oceanography, climatology, and coastal management will gather to discuss strategies for addressing climate change-related risks and improving predictive capabilities for extreme events such as storms, coastal erosion, and sea level rise.
Key Events
GlobalCoast Network Assembly
A significant highlight of the meeting will be the inaugural GlobalCoast Network Assembly, marking the beginning of an international collaboration aimed at strengthening coastal protection. This expert network will bring together representatives from countries including the Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Fiji, Mexico, Ghana, Malaysia, Thailand, and Barbados. The initiative seeks to foster joint projects and share methodologies for risk prediction and climate change adaptation.
DCC-CR Ratifies the Partner Alliance Network with CMCC and Deltares
Another milestone event will be the official ratification of the Partner Alliance Network by the DCC-CR Program Committee Assembly. This decision will mark a major governance transition, formally integrating CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change) and Deltares into DCC-CR as permanent strategic partners.
This strengthened alliance will:
- Expand DCC-CR’s scientific and operational capabilities in coastal resilience, leveraging CMCC’s expertise in climate modeling and Deltares’ leadership in applied hydrodynamics and risk assessment.
- Enhance predictive tools and methodologies to improve early warning systems for coastal hazards.
- Promote interdisciplinary research collaborations between scientific institutions, policymakers, and local communities.
- Develop innovative coastal adaptation strategies, including nature-based solutions and sustainable urban planning.
- Strengthen capacity-building efforts, ensuring knowledge transfer to local authorities, practitioners, and Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs).
This Strategic Alliance will increase the global impact of DCC-CR, making it a more influential hub for scientific cooperation and policy innovation in coastal resilience.
Event Program
The meetings and workshops will take place at the Mercure Hotel President Conference Center in Lecce and will cover crucial topics in coastal resilience:
- February 3: FLAME Workshop (led by the National Oceanography Center) to establish standardized protocols for coastal climate analysis.
- February 3: DCC-CR Program Committee Meeting (by invitation), where the ratification of the Strategic Partnership with CMCC and Deltares will take place, reinforcing collaboration and expanding the scope of action.
- February 4-5: CoastPredict General Assembly, reviewing progress and setting future goals for the program.
- February 5-6: The First GlobalCoast Network Assembly, where representatives will present Pilot Sites and discuss implementation strategies.
- February 6-7: Workshop for Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs), focusing on training the next generation of coastal resilience experts.
