The Communication Center for the Oceans-CCOceanos is pleased to inform that this year it is holding a special series of lectures in Lisbon under the title CCOceanos: The Ocean Decade joining Portuguese and other Portuguese-speaking countries (via remote LiveStream). These sessions are being internationally disseminated in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) and the Camões-Institute for Cooperation and Language, IP, institutional partner since 2019.
The 2nd CCOceanos “Ocean Decade Series” Lecture, under the theme «The Ocean Decade: Climate Change/ Predicting the ocean», will be held on June 8 - World Oceans Day – broadcasting LiveStream at 6:00 PM (local time) from the National Museum of Natural History and Science, in Lisbon.
The invited speakers are: Dra. Fátima Abrantes - PhD in Geological Oceanography-Paleoceanography and Principal Investigator at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA); Dr. João Vitorino - Oceanographer Responsible for the Monitoring Network of the Underwater Cannon da Nazaré (Hydrographic Institute) and Prof. Alexander Turra - Full Professor at the Oceanographic Institute at the University of São Paulo, Brazil (IOUSP).
Sailing journalist Nysse Arruda, founder and curator of the Communication Center for the Oceans - CCOceanos, explains that this special series of lectures in Lisbon presents a variety of themes related to the newest UN initiative in the scope of the ocean: «The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)», also called “The Ocean Decade”, thus making Portugal a center of communication and sharing updated information and knowledge about the Ocean.
This special series of CCOceanos lectures is organized in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the coordinating entity for the preparations of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (http://oceandecade.org), which contributed to the identification and selection of topics for the lectures and the international dissemination of the links of the Video Library CCOceanos Palestras on the YouTube channel.
Vinicius Grunberg Lindoso, in charge of Communication at IOC-UNESCO, explains that the collaboration with the Communication Centre for the Oceans-CCOceans through this special series of lectures arose from the need to increase the number of informative actions on the ocean and on the UN Decade for the Portuguese and Portuguese-speaking public, building a greater understanding of the issues that will address the 2nd UN Conference on the Ocean in Lisbon (Altice Arena) meanwhile postponed due to the coronavirus-COVID19 pandemic.
In addition to the renewal of an institutional partnership with Camões-Cooperation and Language Institute, IP, CCOceanos also has the support of entities with national scope, such as the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the Casa da América Latina, the UCCLA-Union of Portuguese-speaking Capital Cities, the National Culture Center (CNC), the Hydrographic Institute, the Lisbon Science Academy, in addition to the Ministry of the Sea, the Ministry of the Environment and the Lisbon City Council and also non-governmental organizations such as the Marine MegaFauna Foundation in Mozambique and Onda Verde and the Women's League for the Oceans in Brazil.
