Abyss Project – Five Islands Eco Tour is a citizen-science initiative promoting ocean literacy and conservation through an immersive marine experience around the Five Islands Nature Reserve off the coast of Wollongong, Australia.
Guided by marine scientist Nathalie Simmonds, the tours turn the Nature Reserve into a living classroom boasting documentary worthy biodiversity on the “Humpback Highway” boasting whales, seals and migratory seabirds along a heavily industrialized coastline.
The tour pays deep respect to Indigenous Culture, and highlights the urgent need for marine protection and management on both a local and international scale, supporting the goals of the UN Ocean Decade. To protect the ocean, is to protect ourselves.
