‘Seeding Sustainability: Mangrove restoration training’ is a capacity-building programme that supports mangrove restoration in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a focus on Ecuador and Peru.
Following a first edition in Ecuador in 2025, this edition will be implemented in Tumbes, Peru (May 2026). The 10-day programme brings together inter/national trainers to exchange expertise across 4 multidisciplinary modules: (1) the importance of mangrove ecosystems; (2) community-based ecological mangrove restoration; (3) mangrove policy and management; and (4) sustainable socio-economic activities. It targets local communities dependent on mangroves, students and professionals in relevant disciplines, and local and national decision-makers. By combining theoretical and hands-on learning, the programme ensures that participants gain multidisciplinary and practical knowledge on mangrove conservation and restoration. This course is open for the following target groups, community members, students, professionals, and decision-makers from Peru and Ecuador.
The project is organized by the organisations VUB, ESPOL, CONMANOPE, UNESCO, and VLIZ, framed within the UNESCO MAB Mangrove Restoration project (MangRes).
