The intersection of ocean science and public policy is a critical arena in the contemporary global landscape, where the increasing pressure on marine ecosystems demands urgent and coordinated responses. This information session will foster dialogue between scientists, policymakers and international bodies to bridge the gap between cutting-edge oceanographic research and the decision-making processes of national and international policymakers.
Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica and organized by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), this event will be held immediately before the first informal negotiations of the political declaration for the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (Nice, June 2025).
It will provide Member States with the opportunity to interact with a range of experts from within and outside the UN system on the fundamental role of ocean science and knowledge to underpin the achievement of SDG14 and the broader 2030 Agenda. The event will be an important milestone in highlighting priority ocean science and knowledge issues that can inform dialogue at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference.
Specifically, the event will:
• Highlight the central role of ocean science and knowledge to support achievement of the 2030 Agenda and related global policy frameworks and explore future priorities for ocean science and knowledge with a focus on the recommendations arising from the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference and the recommendations of the scientific committee of the One Ocean Science Congress (a pre-UNOC Special Event).
• Examine existing mechanisms and remaining challenges and propose pathways for ocean science and knowledge to inform decision making for tangible and lasting action for sustainable ocean management including via emerging science-policy-society initiatives.
• Explore key messages that could inform Member States’ upcoming negotiations on the political declaration for the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference.
