For decades, governments, organizations, and academia have carried out activities to raise awareness and care for the oceans, as they are a vast area that harbors life, science, food, and provides well-being to the planet. However, dispersed activities aimed at a broad audience leave a low percentage of awareness and interest.
This activity seeks to raise awareness and educate the ESPOL community and the communities with which it works closely, within a period of two years.
The main objective of our activity is to raise awareness, educate, and implement sustainability activities for ocean care (Ch. 9 – 10). We will cover 4 major topics with activities scheduled over two emblematic dates in 2025 and 2026: June 8, World Oceans Day, and December 5, Declaration of the Ocean Decade. The topics to be addressed are: Marine pollution and solutions (Ch. 1); Biodiversity and marine conservation (Ch. 2); Climate change and oceans; Innovation and science for the oceans (Ch. 5).
The first phase, in June 2025, raised awareness about marine pollution through a minga called “Clean Your Footprint” and educational activities with Recicla LATAM. Keynote talks and interactive booths addressed ocean-related issues like microplastics and sustainable materials. This phase concluded with a film forum featuring the documentary Deep Rising and a panel of ESPOL researchers.
