The “Breaking the Surface: Women in Marine Research” exhibition shines a light on eleven exceptional female ocean scientists from northern Germany—figures like Johanna Baehr, Antje Boetius, and Katja Matthes—who are making groundbreaking contributions to oceanography, climate modeling, deep-sea research, sea-ice dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles.
More than simply showcasing scientific achievements, the exhibition highlights the personal stories of these women who have overcome systemic barriers and “glass ceilings” in a historically male-dominated field.
Through large-scale, intimate portraits by photographer Marzena Skubatz, accompanied by video art and personal reflections, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on both the science and perseverance behind the research.
A powerful nod to gender equity and inclusion in marine science, this exhibition serves as a bonding platform and inspiration network for women researchers, while delving into their shared passion for understanding and preserving the ocean.
