Under the ArcticNet Call for Proposals, Arctic marine science projects that align with the priorities of the Ocean Decade will be funded with the objectives and anticipated benefits of:
- Funding approximately 4-5 official Canadian Arctic Ocean Decade projects;
- Strengthening Canada’s response to the Ocean Decade;
- Fostering Indigenous co-development of Ocean Decade Actions by supporting projects with relevance at multiple scales, from the local to global.
ArcticNet anticipates that 4-5 official Ocean Decade projects will be initiated. It is estimated that each project will release 5-10 peer-reviewed publications per year, for a total of 10-20 peer-reviewed publications each, or between 40-100 total. Further, each project is expected to release 15-20 non-refereed publications per year for a total of 30-40 each, or between 120-200 total. In this description, non-refereed publications can refer to scientific presentations, consultations, podcasts, public presentations, radio interviews, workshops, and conferences.
Further, a fundamental component of ArcticNet is to support the next generation of Arctic experts. Funding on ArcticNet projects is prioritized for the benefit of the Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) employed, particularly northern HQP (NHQP). It is anticipated that each project will support approximately 10 HQP, and an additional 2 NHQP. This will average a total of between 40-50 HQP and 8-10 NHQP.
Additional expected results of this initiative include the fostering of collaborations between Arctic marine academics, knowledge holders, as well as government, NGO and industry representatives. Further, it is anticipated that with a focus on co-development of research, that the initiative will also increase research capacity for engaged northern and Indigenous communities.
