The COVID-19 Bio-Logging Initiative investigates responses of marine animals to altered levels of human activity during the pandemic.
Specifically, this community-driven programme analyses tracking (“bio-logging”) data on the movements and behaviour of marine mammals, birds, reptiles and fish (including sharks) along with human activity data (e.g., fishing, shipping, noise inputs, coastal activities) collected before, during and after COVID-19 lockdowns across the globe. By understanding how marine organisms respond to changes in human activity, the programme will significantly advance our understanding of human-wildlife interactions in the world’s oceans and help inform global efforts to foster sustainable coexistence.
