This is the next phase of the project The Current. See previous phase here: The Current III “The Mediterranean: Waves Come in Pairs”.
This phase will focus on oceanic kinships, cultural languages, embodied legacies, ancestral memory, and marine historiographies within the Indian Ocean World, with a particular emphasis on island geographies connecting Afrasian pasts, presents, and futures. Working alongside artists, scientific researchers, musicians, writers, and poets, this initiative will continue a decade-long trajectory of individual and collaborative practices unfolding across the waterways of the Indian Ocean.
Key Lines of Action:
- To examine the entangled histories and futures of the Indian Ocean region through the lens of oceanic kinship, cultural languages, and embodied legacies linking South Asia, East Africa, and the Gulf.
- To cultivate site-responsive artistic and scientific practices through collaborative research and convenings across island and coastal nodes, fostering situated learning and creative exchange.
- To support engagements within culturally rooted contexts, encouraging slow, conscious mobility, deep listening, and long-term relationships across the Indian Ocean basin.
