Since 2021, the Ocean Literacy Project – Knowing the Ocean has connected 4th-grade students from Antônio Paschoal Apóstolo Municipal School (Florianópolis) with marine themes such as biodiversity, climate, and the ocean–human relationship.
Reaching about 2,000 children and integrated into the school’s Pedagogical Political Project since 2022, it promotes socio-environmental awareness through interactive lectures, experiments, gamification, workshops, and field trips.
A key outcome was collecting and properly disposing of 32 kg of hard-to-recycle materials.
Now in its 5th edition, activities include “Creature or Garbage?”, “Our Beach”, “Climate Crisis: Why Study Antarctica?”, and the “Used Sponge Collection Campaign”.
Inspired by the UNESCO e-book Ocean Literacy for All, the project aims to embed marine education in public schools, stressing the impact of marine litter and reinforcing SDG 14. It is replicable and adaptable to different socio-environmental contexts.
