Oceans Alive – Kenya
In Kenya, artisanal overfishing and illegal fishing gear have depleted coral reef fish stocks and biodiversity, threatening livelihoods.
Oceans Alive (OA) has worked with the Kuruwitu community to improve biodiversity and wellbeing through a 20-year community marine protected area, coral restoration, and income diversification.
Kuruwitu is a living ocean classroom where small-scale fishing communities can see the ecological/social change possible through local solutions where traditional knowledge is blended with modern best practices.
Through the Living Ocean Classroom project, peer trainers from Kuruwitu to train 4 nearby communities on coral restoration (improving fish habitat, biodiversity and income) and recycling (cleaning beaches and generating income).
OA will then help establish coral restoration and recycling training sites in each community, improving biodiversity and livelihoods while creating a scalable peer-learning model grounded in traditional knowledge and values.
