The Integrated Coastal Protection Service of Rio Grande do Sul (ProCostaRS) project involves developing an integrated environmental monitoring system for the coastline of Rio Grande do Sul state, in southern Brazil, by combining in situ data, numerical modeling, and environmental monitoring.
The initiative supports municipalities in addressing climate change impacts, fostering resilience, sustainable development, and ocean literacy.
The system is based on five pillars:
1) continuous monitoring and early-warning network for oceanographic and meteorological events;
2) modeling coastal vulnerability to erosion and flooding, with adaptation strategies;
3) assessing climate change and tropicalization impacts on marine resources, with a focus on using fishery species as bioindicators;
4) monitoring microcontaminants to detect early water quality changes; and
5) promoting environmental education, ocean literacy, and community capacity-building.
