Lead institution:
International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) – Monaco
The Empowering Women in Hydrography project aims to enable more women to participate equitably in the field of hydrography and to reach more leadership roles.
Hydrography, like other fields in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), sees an imbalance between the participation of women compared to men. This inequity is emphasized at advanced career echelons; for example, currently only 6 out of the 97 Member States of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) have a National Hydrographer who is a woman.
This project will coordinate activities and outreach initiatives to raise awareness about the issue of gender equity, with the participation of IHO Member States. It will include a study of the numbers of women in leadership positions, training opportunities and symposiums, and the establishment of a mentoring network. A communication campaign will highlight women role models in the ocean community, with a focus on women in hydrography. Canada, Norway and the United Kingdom have already agreed to participate.
