This Decade Action empowers Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) to take leadership in trait-based monitoring and functional technologies across the Yucatán Peninsula, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mesoamerican Reef.
By integrating stereo-video, environmental DNA, respirometry and AI tools, ECOPs will generate an open fish-trait database and a video repository that reveal hidden ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling, connectivity and resilience, including the role of smaller reef systems.
The initiative combines scientific innovation with inclusive capacity building, training ECOPs and inspiring younger students through workshops and science fairs.
It aligns with the ECOP Programme by fostering professional development, mentorship and international networking, while providing functional indicators that inform climate adaptation and ecosystem-based management.
