Lead institution:
ABALOBI – South Africa
CHRN safeguards and revitalises the cultural heritage of small-scale fishing communities while strengthening resilience to climate and socio-economic change.
Building on ABALOBI’s co-design model, CHRN integrates oral histories, traditional ecological knowledge, and community narratives into digital platforms that support sustainable livelihoods and stewardship.
In partnership with KU Leuven’s Climares project, fishers contribute to a “human sensor network,” documenting real-time ecological changes alongside heritage practices and observations.
This dual focus ensures cultural and ecological knowledge is preserved, validated, and shared, fostering intergenerational transfer, community pride, and stronger identities.
Through heritage mapping, capacity building, and collaborative storytelling, CHRN ensures coastal heritage remains a living, evolving asset that underpins both cultural vitality and ocean resilience, advancing the SDGs and the Ocean Decade vision.
