KIKAI Institute for Coral Reef Sciences – Japan
Kikaijima Island in Japan’s Amami archipelago, shaped by uplifted coral reefs, has sustained culture, industry, and livelihoods for over 8,000 years. Today, climate change and coastal development threaten reefs, while seawalls reduce human–sea ties.
This project revalues marine heritage, promotes behavioral change, and offers a model of sustainable coexistence with coral reefs.
Its five pillars are: citizen–scientist research, art- and design-based dialogue, community-led conservation and disaster preparedness, education at local and international levels, and wider application via a “Floating University.”
By sharing research, artworks, and curricula globally, the project demonstrates how participation, science, and creativity can advance sustainability and resilience.
